# Known Limitations in Compass

Compass is built to keep surveys simple and results confidential, and some things it deliberately does not do. This page lists the limits clients ask about most, so you can plan around them before a stakeholder asks.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Current as documented.** These are the limitations documented in this knowledge base today. Some vary by how your organization is configured, and any may change in a future release. Check [Product Updates](/knowledge-base/general/product-updates.md) for changes.

## Survey design

* **Whole-question and whole-page randomization are not supported.** Question and page order is manual. You can randomize the order of answer options within a question and the rows or columns of a matrix question. See [Survey Designer - Complete Guide](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/creating-surveys-quick-start/survey-designer-complete-guide.md).
* **Templates cannot be edited.** To update a questionnaire template, delete it and save a new version from an updated questionnaire. Surveys already created from the template are unaffected.
* **500 questions per survey** is the technical limit. The practical limit for completion rates is far lower: 15 to 20 for a pulse survey, 30 to 60 for an annual engagement survey, 5 to 10 for an exit survey.
* **Editing a live survey is limited.** After a survey is sent, you can add questions at the end, fix obvious typos, and add pages. Do not change question wording significantly, delete questions, or change response scales.
* **Ranked Choice questions** (beta) are not available in 360 assessments, do not appear in dashboards or the dashboard export, are not benchmarked, are not compared to a previous period, and cannot be converted to a demographic filter. See [Ranked Choice Questions](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/creating-surveys-quick-start/ranked-choice-questions.md).
* **Participant Directory surveys use one list.** A survey connects to one participant list. Use a filter to narrow it. See [Surveys Using a Participant List - Complete Guide](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/participant-directory-overview/use-a-participant-list-in-a-survey-quick-start/surveys-using-a-participant-list-complete-guide.md).
* **A participant list's structure cannot be edited by hand.** It is generated from participant data. See [Reporting Structure and Access - Complete Guide](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/participant-directory-overview/give-restricted-users-access-quick-start/reporting-structure-and-access-complete-guide.md).
* **Calculated bands do not update over time on their own.** Length of Service and Age Range change only when a participant is imported or edited. See [Attributes and Calculated Fields - Complete Guide](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/participant-directory-overview/set-up-a-participant-list-quick-start/attributes-and-calculated-fields-complete-guide.md).
* **Deactivation does not record a reason.** See [Managing Participants - Complete Guide](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/participant-directory-overview/set-up-a-participant-list-quick-start/managing-participants-complete-guide.md).

## Reporting and exports

* **No group is reported on with fewer than 5 responses.** This applies to every report. Correlation reports need at least 30 responses regardless of the minimum. See [Compass Reports](/knowledge-base/step-5-analyze-interpret-and-report/compass-reports.md).
* **Snapshot filter-similarity blocking.** A new Snapshot filter must differ by at least 5 respondents from each of the last 5 reports you ran, or it is blocked. See [How does report filter confidentiality work?](/knowledge-base/step-5-analyze-interpret-and-report/compass-reports/reporting-faq/how-does-report-filter-confidentiality-work.md).
* **Reports show groups, not individuals.** The documented way to see one participant's full answers is Individual Reports (PDF). TalentMap must enable the feature per survey, and it removes confidentiality for that survey. See [Individual Reports](/knowledge-base/step-5-analyze-interpret-and-report/compass-reports/general/individual-reports.md).
* **Submitted responses cannot be changed.** Once a participant clicks submit, the response is locked. A Site Admin can delete the response and re-add the participant so they retake the survey. See [How to Allow a Participant to Retake a Survey](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/import-participants/how-to-allow-a-participant-to-retake-a-survey.md).
* **Response rate exports are timestamped in UTC.** See [Monitor Response Rates](/knowledge-base/step-4-deploy-employee-survey/monitor-response-rates.md).

## Administration

* **Site Admin accounts are created by TalentMap.** Site Admins can then create Report Viewers and Restricted Report Viewers. See [Permissions](/knowledge-base/step-5-analyze-interpret-and-report/compass-admin/users/permissions.md).
* **One integration per organization.** To switch HR data sources, remove the existing integration first. Removing an integration deletes its configuration, participants, fields, and logs. The integration type cannot be changed after creation. See [Integrations: Connecting Your HR Data Source](/knowledge-base/step-5-analyze-interpret-and-report/compass-admin/integrations-connecting-your-hr-data-source.md).
* **Integrations sync once a day at 12:00 UTC.** The schedule is set at the system level. You can run a manual sync at any time.
* **Participants removed from your HR source are not removed from Compass.** They stop receiving updates. Remove them manually if needed.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.talentmap.com/knowledge-base/general/known-limitations-in-compass.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
