# Start Here: Find Your Path

Pick the description that fits you and follow its checklist. Each path points you to the articles you need, in the order you need them.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Roles and permissions.** These are descriptions of what you do, not Compass permission names. A Survey Lead may be a Site Admin or a Survey Creator depending on how your organization set up Compass. See [Permissions](/knowledge-base/step-5-analyze-interpret-and-report/compass-admin/users/permissions.md) for the four client-facing roles.

## I am the Survey Lead

You own the survey program for your organization and work with TalentMap through the seven steps.

1. Read [Getting Started](/knowledge-base/getting-started.md) for the seven steps, their deliverables, and typical timing.
2. Log in to the TalentMap Portal and confirm your tasks. See [Timelines and Deliverables](/knowledge-base/step-1-prepare-for-action/timelines-and-deliverables.md).
3. Book your questionnaire design call at least 3 weeks before launch. See [When should we schedule the questionnaire design call?](/knowledge-base/step-1-prepare-for-action/prepare-for-action-faq/when-should-we-schedule-the-questionnaire-design-call.md).
4. Prepare your participant file and get TalentMap email addresses whitelisted. See [Participant Information File](/knowledge-base/step-3-pre-survey-communication-and-setup/participant-information-file.md) and [Email Whitelisting](/knowledge-base/step-3-pre-survey-communication-and-setup/email-whitelisting.md).
5. Plan communications with the templates in [Survey Communications](/knowledge-base/step-3-pre-survey-communication-and-setup/survey-communications.md).
6. While the survey is open, use [Monitor Response Rates](/knowledge-base/step-4-deploy-employee-survey/monitor-response-rates.md) and the [Survey Live FAQ](/knowledge-base/step-4-deploy-employee-survey/survey-live-faq.md).
7. After it closes, start with [Compass Reports](/knowledge-base/step-5-analyze-interpret-and-report/compass-reports.md), then [Action Planning in Compass](/knowledge-base/step-7-communicate-and-take-action/action-planning-in-compass.md).

## I build and launch surveys myself

You use Compass to design, translate, schedule, and send surveys.

1. Follow [Create and Launch Your First Pulse Survey](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/getting-started-create-and-launch-your-first-pulse-survey.md) end to end once.
2. Learn the designer in the [Survey Designer - Complete Guide](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/creating-surveys-quick-start/survey-designer-complete-guide.md), and reuse TalentMap content with the [Questionnaire Library](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/creating-surveys-quick-start/questionnaire-library.md).
3. Add branching with [Survey Logic and Display Conditions - Quick Start](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/survey-logic-and-display-conditions-quick-start.md).
4. Upload participants with [Import Participants](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/import-participants.md), or use [PIN Authentication for Survey Access](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/import-participants/pin-authentication-for-survey-access.md) for participants without email.
5. Schedule invitations and reminders with [Scheduling Emails - Quick Start](/knowledge-base/survey-design-and-deployment/scheduling-emails-quick-start.md).
6. Check [Known Limitations](/knowledge-base/general/known-limitations-in-compass.md) before you promise a feature to a stakeholder.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.talentmap.com/knowledge-base/start-here-find-your-path.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
