# Action Planning in Compass

Action Planning turns your survey results into tracked, accountable improvement plans so managers can act on feedback and HR administrators can monitor progress across the organization.

### What Action Planning does

After a survey closes and results are available in Compass, managers can browse a library of consultant-crafted action plan templates (or create their own), set milestones with specific deadlines, and track progress over time. HR administrators get real-time visibility into who is taking action and who is not.

Unlike tracking plans in a spreadsheet, Action Planning surfaces your survey's specific strengths and opportunities, suggests relevant templates matched to your data, and provides a curated library written by organizational psychologists.

### Navigation

Click **Actions** in the top navigation bar. The sidebar shows four pages:

* **Guidance** — Your starting point with step-by-step instructions configured by your HR administrator.
* **Results** — Survey strengths and opportunities with suggested action plans.
* **Plans** — Where you create, manage, and track your action plans.
* **Status** — Organization-wide progress monitoring (visible to administrators and consultants).

Administrators also see a **Setup** page for configuring the reporting structure, assigning users, and writing Guidance content.

### Recommended workflow

1. Navigate to **Actions** > **Setup** > **Structure** and generate your reporting structure. The reporting structure must be configured before you can view suggested actions on the Results page or create plans on the Plans page.
2. (Optional) Navigate to **Setup** > **Users** and assign users to the reporting structure. You only need to assign users if you want managers and executives to log in to Compass and create, manage, and monitor their own action plans.
3. Navigate to the **Results** page to review your survey strengths and opportunities.
4. Click any opportunity item to see suggested action plan templates matched to that specific result.
5. Select a template and click **CREATE ACTION** to add it to your **Plans** page.
6. Set milestone due dates and assign owners.
7. Check off milestones as you complete them.
8. Use the **Status** page to monitor progress across teams.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Setup is required first.** The Results and Plans pages require a reporting structure before they display suggested actions or allow you to create plans. Complete the Structure tab in Setup before proceeding.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
**Start focused.** Research shows that 1-3 well-executed action plans outperform trying to address everything at once.
